Sony Alpha NEX-3 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Silver)- 14.2 Mpix Review

This is a great review from Amazon for the black version of the combo NEX-3-18-55mm written, so that in the interest of other Amazon users will try not to repeat everything already written.

Keep in mind that this review is written by an experienced DSLR users, who can have this room that I do not find Particularly attractive, however, are acceptable for many users point-and-shoots.

The first thing you'll notice the NEX-3, is that it seemsfeeling of solidity. The 18-55 lens is usually made of metal, while the laser plastic body with rubber coated handle. The camera feels in your hand is hard, but surprisingly diminutive. My first gripe with the camera's memory stick their owners. Designed for both SD and Memory Stick socket, there is a sort of internal adapter snaps down the sticks as take them farther into the camera. The adapter feels a bit 'fragile. Most Sony digital SLRs have requested slots for SD cards and Memory.

Also due to the fact that the camera lens much closer to the sensor is shorter (18 mm, 40% over traditional DSLR), the effect of defocusing very marked evenly with shots of the camera at F5.0 50 mm. Sample images were all taken with the 18-55mm lens included. DSLR Anyone can appreciate the substantial defocusing effect in view of the lens kit "rather small aperture (F3.5-5.6). Moreover, the 18-55mm lens focuses a minimumDistance of 25 cm, with a magnification of about 0.7. You may not be possible to produce true macro shooting, but the end result of a semi close-up is very encouraging.

For normal use, is the best way of "I" (Intelligent) mode, the camera can think for you. The camera sets the ISO, white balance and speed shuttle leaving the opening for you to check the background defocusing. Howerver have known that if you set the number of F is too high (small openingIt captures everything in front and behind the focal point), the camera turns on the ISO and you drive a bit 'grainy. Of course, given the quality of the sensor, the noise level may be acceptable for you.

The automatic white balance function allows something to be desired, so you know your room to get better, you might want the color settings of your images and improve a little more natural looking results to explore.

So here are some of the highlightsThe NEX-3 18-55mm (and I hope I'm not repeating too much what the other reviewers mentioned):

1) Objective 18-55: Superb construction, to handle absolutely beautiful. Large zoom ring and focusing. You can zoom in and out manually during the video shoot (no T / W toggle switch on this thing). Certainly not the best 18-55m zoom lens, it is obvious barrel distortion at 18mm, but the distortion disappears slowly, as you zoom to 24mm.

2) the camera body: LargeStyling, compact, rotating 3-inch LCD with incredible contrast. The LCD high-resolution, we know almost everything a user point-and-shoot needs, and much more.

3) Image quality: I can not stress enough the pictures are simply sublime. At ISO 200-1600, the colors are rich and expressive, with very little noise even at the pixel level. 3200-12800 units if you need that extra sensitivity.

4) Speed: Max on 7fps, normal to 2.3 fps (withcontinuous focus).

5) The Panorama function is smoother than the Sony, but still compressed side effects such as distortion, etc. is probably not a problem if you are with the pictures for small prints.

6) The external flash is included, but unnecessary for most occasions such as the camera sensor handles low light, so good not to lose the flash at all.

7) The stereo microphone is almost invisible to the camera, but works in the collection720p stereo sound for the recordings.

8) E 'on-line virtual PSAM shuttle speed, the aperture size and the combination thereof, including the control bulb mode. There are some ways to get the dial, but mainly to be different menus.

9) The graphical user interface (GUI) is getting used to. Pressing the Menu button takes you to six icons, the first door to the PSAM / scene / s mode/panorama/3D Panorama (after firmware update)virtual dial, took the second camera's menu, where you drive mode (Single / Burst / High-Speed Burst), AF / MF, the emphasis moves to the third icon image size and aspect ratio, the brightness and color of the fourth controls, including ISO, white balance, measuring, DRO / HDR, creative style, the fifth symbol include more playback features, including deleting files, slide show, rotate and print functions and the sixth button is the button setup, where you can format the memory card. The"Scene" mode is preloaded with a sample picture for each scene to give you an idea of what you need to choose to customize your reception. Here is where you get the same in the early handheld and anti-blur features select Sony HX1/HX5V/HX55, TX1/TX5 and TX7.

10) The rotating wheel is a four directional keys on the keyboard. I find myself constantly pressing the knob and turn it too hard and end up accidentally selecting the items I need. While aperture priority,Press the knob to the left will take you directly to the single / continuous / menu timered captured by pressing the knob to the right leads to the flash menu by pressing the knob on the bottom allows the adjustment of exposure compensation and press the dial up you can choose between different types of screen display.

11) For photos, there are two JPEG compression standard and fine. There are more ways RAW RAW + JPEG mode, as in a typical DSLR.

Since the E-Series is a relatively new system, here is what I get for this, then what hope for the series in the future:
A super wide-angle zoom, maybe 7mm-16mm, 16mm, replace the first. The examination on the first 16 mm on dpreview is not great, especially since the captured images are blurred at the edges, there are significant purple fringing in the lower F-numbers and images are badly distorted at the edges.

More power zoom lens that is significantly smaller than expected 18-200, to be published this autumn.

A true macro lens.

A good lensmassive F1.4 aperture.

A more powerful flash with bounce function. The current external flash has a guide number of 7, while my alpha flash has a guide number of 42 I can not emphasize enough the role of rebound, as this is one of the few things keeping the series NEX just one step below Sony Alpha. The multi-function connector, Sony should have no problem with different types of flash high-power working with the series NEX.

CompleteSupport for A-mount lenses. The current A-mount adapter does not support autofocus. I guess there is nothing Sony can do with the lack of features Super Steady Shot with a vibration sensor, Such as the E-Series are designed with optical stabilization.

So there you have it. As for a camera point-and-shoot is the NEX-3 is undoubtedly one of the most powerful cameras outside. The NEX-5 and 1080i video in AVCHD (not progressive) and is available in a smaller, moreMetal front and support for alpha-remote control (remote-Shuttle-release).

Product Overview

Sony's Alpha) NEX-3 takes mirror-less/finder-less, interchangeable-lens camera technology to the next level by integrating the resolving power of an APS-format imaging sensor in a camera body that's 48% smaller and 49% lighter than traditional compact DSLRs.

While the camera is physically smaller than a compact DSLR, it retains the imaging qualities of an APS imaging sensor, which contains 58% more surface area than a Four Thirds imaging sensor, and about 13 times the surface area of point-and-shoot imaging sensors. The end result is true pro-quality resolving power in a far smaller package. For still imaging, the NEX-3 captures JPEGs (Fine or Standard), RAW, or JPEG+RAW in a choice of sRGB or Adobe RGB color spaces. In addition to stills, the NEX-3 also captures extremely vivid 720p video @ 30 fps as well as standard-definition video recording. For more precise audio there is an optional shoe-mounted shotgun mic that features 90°/120° tilt movement.

The NEX-3 is designed to use Sony E-series lenses, a compact line of optics designed to work with the reduced flange distance that resulted from the removal of the reflex viewing system. The new E-series optics are smaller than Sony's traditional DSLR optics while retaining the imaging qualities Sony is recognized for. In addition to Sony E-series optics, you can also use any of Sony's traditional DSLR lenses (as well as all Minolta AF-mount optics) on the NEX-3 by using the optional LA-EA1 lens adapter. (Note - Manual focus and full-open aperture metering only when using LA-EA1 lens adapter).
